Our First showed great spirit and teamwork today in defeating a gallant Railway Union RFC by 20-10 in a tense promotion/relegation playoff in DLSP grounds today. The game swung from end to end with Railway scoring a try early in first half to lead 7-0. Chris Jebb penalty shortly afterwards brought us back into the game and ten minutes later a try in the corner by Niall Nolan converted by Chris left Clon 10-7 ahead. Railway converted a penalty to make half time score 10-10. The Second half was an epic 57 minutes long. A penalty by Chris after six minutes restored Clon’s lead to 13-10. Thereafter the game ebbed and flowed with both sides trying to score but defences were dominant on both teams. With ten minutes to go Matt Stapleton made a great break and followed up his kick ahead only to be impeded from touching down. The Ref awarded a Penalty Try to give Clon a 20-10 lead. Railway tried their best to get back on score sheet but dogged defence by Clon kept them at bay. The Ref announced 30 seconds left in the game but due to a series of penalties the game continued for a further 17 minutes. Railway tried everything but great tackling and determined concentration kept them out and eventually the ball was kicked dead and the final whistle was blown.
We have done what was within our control. Now we await Ashbourne to win the Round Robin tournament and hopefully Tullamore to avoid the drop from AIL. Fingers crossed.
Next Saturday afternoon at 2.00pm our Thirds play AIB at 2.00pm in DCU in the Metro League Final. So lets get all our mini’s, underage players and parents and coaches out to support our club in search of another Leinster Cup victory.
