Our Third team put up a great performance in the final on Metro League 9 as they were just pipped at the post by AIB RFC with a scoreline on 24-23 at the final whistle. It was an excellent game with chances on both sides. AIB went ahead in the first half playing into the wind with two penalties to lead 6-0. Then Rae Connor knocked over a penalty to bring the score to 6-3. AIB then scored a try and penalty to carry a good lead into the second half and with ten minutes to go lead 24-14. Another penalty by Rae Connor brought the score to 24-16 and the a great break by Eoin Delaney from his own half, he broke a few tackles and sped to the corner. He was impeded in the act of scoring and the referee eventually awarded a penalty try. This brought the score to the narrowest of margins – just the one point but in spite of great effort by all the Clon players they could not manage the vital winning score. All credit to the players on both sides for a very sporting game. This was the first occasion that AIB have won a Leinster Branch pennant so congratulations to them on their tight victory today in DCU.
