Clon u16s got the new season off to a winning start in their opening match in sunny Wexford, winning 6 tries to 4 in a keenly-fought and close, open game.
The men in yellow have been working hard in pre-season and it showed in their first-up tackles and solid lineouts.
Early tries from Louis Lavin and Conor Branigan, the latter after a brilliant run from Dylan Clarke, had Clon ahead in a game played in 3 periods of 20 minutes to allow each team try out new options. Cillian Sallier and Manny Muritala added further tries for the away side in the second period, with Jack Brennan slotting an excellent conversion in difficult conditions for kickers. But Gorey stayed well in the game, especially with some strong running from their big pack and with 20 to go, Clon were only 5 ahead.
But some quick thinking from Dylan O’Sullivan saw him dot down for try number five and captain, Luke Swayne sealed the win in the final moments.
Both teams took a lot of positives from this season opener as they mingled and enjoyed the hospitality laid on by the hosts and Clondalkin will continue their preparations with another tough test at St Mary’s mid week.
