Clondalkin U14s put in an excellent performance but just lost out by the odd try in nine at Forenaughts in an exciting game in cold conditions. The locals boast large numbers at this age level and included some big units in their starting XV, and they started well. Clon clearly took time to find their feet as they found themselves three tries down after twenty minutes. It could have been more only for a brilliant try saving tackle by outhalf, Cathal Downey, who held up his man over the try line, assisted by his number 9, Conor Branigan. But Clondalkin fought back and tremendous work by the forwards saw them camped on the Naas try line after a series of phases. A number of penalties followed as Clon kept the pressure up and eventually Jake O’Reilly burst through to leave the score 19-7 at half time, Jack Brennan having converted.
Clon started the second period as they had finished the first with some key turnovers at ruck time proving crucial – David Hughes and Louis Lavin were instrumental. And it was O’Reilly who grabbed his second of the day with an excellent line break and dummy, again converted by Brennan. Naas managed to pull ahead through a try from their big No. 8 but great interplay between backs and forwards saw Daniel Yerokhin crash over in the corner as Clon came storming back once again as the rain came in and conditions worsened. The sides weren’t finished there as they traded tries once again – the Clon effort a great burst from the 22 by Brandon Graham, with Jamie Brady and James Lindopp involved in the build-up – and by the final whistle both teams will have been happy with their overall performance in a cracking contest that finished 33 – 26 to the home side. Next up for the lads in yellow is Barnhall at Gordon Park on Friday.
