Clon’s Senior Youth team had a convincing win in their opening League game of the year to go straight to the top of Division 1 after beating Ashbourne 47-7 at Gordon Park.
Team captain Luke Swayne got the crucial tries in a tight first half with Jack Brennan adding a conversion for a 12-0 lead. Matches against Ashbourne are always close and enjoyable games and this was proving no different with some serious hits and great passing moves from both teams. Hooker Dylan O’Sullivan nabbed the first try of the second half but Ashbourne came back with a great try of their own to leave the score 19-7. However, Clon pulled away at the end to put a gloss on the score line that perhaps didn’t reflect the close nature of the contest. Another try from Swayne, plus 5-pointers from Dean Farrell, Cathal Downey and Brennan himself – who was excellent from the tee – saw the Clon men pull away although Ashbourne never gave up and exerted some serious pressure at the end. The Clon backline really hit top form as the game progressed with Conor Branigan, Luke Noone, Liam Redmond, Danny Farrell, Brandon Graham and Craig O’Brien all playing their part with quick hands and excellent support lines. And the pack were menacing both in the tight and the loose with Jake Dunphy, Ewan Lester, Jake Lusk, Manny Muritala, David Hughes, Ben Fallon and Louis Lavin all working as a real unit with big hits and strong rucking. Well done also to the backroom team which this week included Nathan Mazingu, Tarik Aitamor, John Velez, and Mikail Albogachiev.
Next up is a trip to Donnybrook and the lads will be looking to build on such a solid start.
